Class Activities & Discussions
"Do what you love" discussion: The resources linked in the handout below are used to prompt a discussion on the message "do what you love." I elicit students to recognize their own assumptions, messages from different sources in their lives, and to respect and understand differing views shared by their peers. This develops their self- and interpersonal-awareness and communication skills.
Vision collage activity: I use my creative background to facilitate this creative activity in class for live sections, and I use this video for online sections of my undergraduate course. This educates and provides students with a new perspective and tool for developing self-awareness. Students have noted that they appreciate this more intuitive approach that complements other more logical perspectives used in the course. I also share this with my online master's students as a way to demonstrate an intervention, which otherwise might be lacking in a distance course.
MBTI explanation and validation: I use my career training to validate MBTI types for students after they take an online assessment. This video is used for online sections of my undergraduate course, and live sections do similar activities in class with discussion to help them understand different types' perspectives. This activity also develops students' self awareness, and touches on stress management and knowledge of interpersonal differences. I also share this video with my master's students as another intervention demonstration.
Speed interviewing: I created this round-robin interviewing activity to help students put into action the skills discussed in class. It helps students recognize weaknesses and support each other by acknowledging and building on strengths. It develops their communication skills and my facilitation also supports them in developing skills in responding to stressful situations such as interviews. This activity was part of the class session presented in the video below.
Interview with a career theorist: In online courses, it is difficult to replicate the engagement that a guest speaker can bring. My solution to in my graduate career counseling course was to connect with a career theorist through an online platform to conduct an interactive interview. By using Google Hangouts, the theorist and I were able to share slides and handouts, which were also posted on the course website. I expect to continue refining my skills on this platform in order to eventually host live Q&A sessions with online students, hold panel discussions, and create other engaging lesson materials.
